Agricola Feeding Strategy: How to Avoid Begging Cards

Published 2026-10-28 · 6 min read · Agricola Companion Rules Series

In Uwe Rosenberg's worker-placement masterpiece Agricola, no mechanic strikes greater terror into players' hearts than the Harvest phase. At the end of Rounds 4, 7, 9, 11, 13, and 14, every player must feed their growing farm family 2 food units per adult (and 1 food for a newborn born that round).

If you come up short by even a single food unit, you are forced to take a Begging Card, inflicting a severe -3 Victory Point penalty per missing food. Taking just two or three Begging Cards (-6 to -9 VP) is almost impossible to overcome in competitive play. Here is how tournament players establish reliable food engines early and time family growth safely.

Food Engine TypeRequired Setup & ResourcesFood Conversion EfficiencyEndgame Scoring Synergy
Fireplace / Cooking Hearth (Livestock Slaughter)2–3 Clay (Fireplace) or 4–5 Clay (Hearth)Slaughter animals at any time: Sheep (2 food), Boar (2–3 food), Cattle (3–4 food)High flexibility; pairs with breeding pairs for perpetual meat
Bake Bread (Clay / Stone Oven)Clay + Stone (Clay Oven 3C/1S, Stone Oven 3C/3S)Bake action converts 1 Grain into 5 food (Clay) or up to 2 Grain into 4 food each (Stone)High explosive food bursts; frees up multiple rounds of actions
Vegetable & Grain Field HarvestPlow actions + Grain/Veg seeds + Field PhaseVegetables yield 2 food in Hearth or 3 in Cooking Hearth; automatic yield at harvestDirect points from plowed fields, grain count, and vegetable bonus
Fishing / Day Laborer / Reed BankSingle action space visitsStatic 1–3 food accumulation (inefficient long-term)Emergency patch only; costs too many precious worker actions

The Golden Rule of Family Growth: Food Engine First

The most common beginner mistake is rushing the Family Growth action in Stage 2 before securing an independent food production loop. While having a 3rd worker grants 50% more actions per round, an extra mouth to feed increases your harvest liability by 2 food every harvest.

Before growing your family, verify you have at least one of these two safeguards:

  1. A Self-Sustaining Breeding Pair: At least one fenced pasture with two sheep, wild boar, or cattle that reproduce during the field phase, providing a guaranteed harvest slaughter without depleting breeding stock.
  2. Stored Sown Grain with an Oven: At least two harvested grain tokens ready to bake into 10 food during your next family growth or sow action.
When is Taking a Begging Card Worth It?Almost never. However, in master-tier tournament play, intentionally taking one Begging Card (-3 VP) in Round 14 can occasionally be mathematically optimal if the alternative action gains 4 or 5 VP (such as completing an expensive Major Improvement or snatching a 4-point bonus card). Outside of Round 14, avoid begging cards at all costs.

3 High-Yield Food Engine Combinations

  • The Fireplace + Sheep Rush: Grabbing 2 Clay in Round 2 or 3 to purchase the small Fireplace ensures you can convert any sheep from the early Round 1-4 animal accumulation into immediate food.
  • The Grain & Clay Oven Leap: Sowing 2 grain fields in Stage 1 or 2 yields 6 grain over consecutive harvests. A single Clay Oven bake action converts 1 grain into 5 food, feeding a 3-person family for an entire harvest with zero wasted worker turns.
  • Synergistic Occupations: Cards like Mushroom Collector, Berry Picker, or Greengrocer inject free food into your supply passively whenever you take necessary resource spaces (Wood or Reed).

Effortless End-Game Score Calculation

Agricola end-game scoring requires tallying fields, pastures, grains, vegetables, sheep, wild boar, cattle, unused farm spaces (-1 each), rooms, family members (3 VP each), bonus points, and deducting begging card penalties. Using a dedicated companion score sheet app eliminates paper math errors and helps you visualize point targets during play.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much food do you need to feed each family member in Agricola?

Each adult family member requires 2 food units during the Harvest phase at the end of Rounds 4, 7, 9, 11, 13, and 14. A newborn family member born in the current round only requires 1 food unit for their first harvest.

What is the penalty for a Begging Card in Agricola?

Each Begging Card deducts 3 Victory Points from your final score at the end of the game. If you are missing 2 food during a harvest, you must take 2 Begging Cards (-6 Victory Points).

When can you slaughter animals for food in Agricola?

If you own a Fireplace or Cooking Hearth, you can slaughter farm animals for food at any time—including during the feeding phase of the Harvest—without using a worker action.

Can you pay food with goods other than food tokens?

Only if you own the appropriate improvements. For example, grain can only be converted to food if baked with an Oven or cooked with a Fireplace/Hearth; vegetables and animals require a Fireplace or Cooking Hearth to convert to food.
