Agricola Board Game Scoring Rules: The Complete Point Calculation Guide

Published 2026-10-27 · 5 min read · Agricola Companion Rules Series

Uwe Rosenberg's classic worker-placement board game Agricola is beloved for its deep farm-building strategy, but tallying points at the end of Round 14 can be notoriously tedious and prone to mathematical errors on paper scorepads.

Agricola rewards balanced farm development. Because every unrepresented farm category (such as having zero sheep or zero plowed fields) inflicts a -1 point penalty, understanding the exact scoring thresholds is critical for winning competitive matches.

Rooms, Family Members & Renovations

Beyond farm crops and livestock, your farmhouse structure contributes heavily to your final point total:

  • Wood Rooms: 0 points per room.
  • Clay Rooms: 1 point per room.
  • Stone Rooms: 2 points per room.
  • Family Members: 3 points per family member living at the end of the game (maximum 15 points for 5 family members).
  • Unused Farmyard Spaces: -1 point for every undeveloped square on your 3×5 farm grid.
The Begging Card Disaster (-3 Points Each)During harvest phases (Rounds 4, 7, 9, 11, 13, and 14), each family member requires 2 food (or 1 food for newborn children). For every single unit of missing food, you are handed a Begging Card worth -3 victory points. Suffering even one or two begging cards can permanently ruin a competitive final score.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do grain and vegetables planted on fields count at the end of Agricola?

Yes. All grain and vegetables currently in your personal supply, stored on your farmyard, and still growing in plowed fields count towards your end-game scoring totals.

What is considered a winning score in Agricola?

In competitive 3-to-4 player games, a score above 40 points is considered very strong, while scores of 48 to 55+ points typically win tournament-level matches.

Can unused stables count as farmyard spaces?

Unfenced stables built directly on an empty farmyard space eliminate the -1 unused space penalty, but do not count as pastures unless enclosed by wooden fences.
